Sept 10th v Garforth Away Lost 2 – 1

Kellington were very unlucky to lose this game in which they dominated for long periods of time. Early pressure created plenty of chances but it wasn’t until midway through the first half that Kellington took the lead. Andy Moore flicked on a long clearance from keeper John Holland and put Simon Wootton through to calmly round the keeper and score. Kellington were comfortable until they were rocked by conceding two goals in as many minutes midway through the second half. As much as they pressured an equalizer did not come and Kellington were left as unlucky losers.

Sept 17th v Ricall Away Drew 5 - 5

Kellington found themselves 3 – 0 down in ten minutes before stand in keeper Dale Fenton had even touched the ball. In poor conditions of wind and rain it looked as though Kellington were in for a drubbing but after 25 minutes Darren Toes pulled a goal back with a flick on header from 8 yards. It fired the team into life and on 35 minutes Simon Wootton scored with a volley from the edge of the box. Just before half time Andy Moore scored a close range header to level the scores 3 – 3 at half time. The conditions led to a very open second half but after 15 minutes Kelvin Robinson chased down a back pass to the keeper, he forced the keeper to miss his kick and followed the ball into the net. 5 minutes later Ricall equalized through a goalmouth scramble and then took the lead a further 10 minutes later. There were further chances at each end until Dave Rathbone fired in from a tight angle to earn Kellington a deserved draw.

Sept 24th v S Milford Away Lost 3 – 1

Kellington were the victims of a number of dubious refereeing decisions that turned the fortunes of this game. Kellington dominated the early stages of the game but failed to convert the chances that came their way. They paid for this when Milford scored against the run of play and gained confidence from it. With the introduction of John Magyar Kellington came out far more aggressive for the second half and scored an equalizer through a Ryan Nock shot from outside the penalty area.. Against the run of play and from a blatantly offside position Milford broke and scored to lead 2 – 1. Milford were then awarded a very dubious penalty but this was saved at full stretch by John Holland. Kellington were forced to press for an equalizer but were again on the wrong side of an offside decision that allowed Milford to break and lead 3 – 1. Kellington had to accept second best when Darren Toes had his penalty saved late in the game

Oct 1st County Cup v Bridge ( Leeds) Away Won 4 – 2 aet

Kellington staged a great comeback in the 1st round of this county cup tie. Playing against unknown opposition meant that Kellington were wary in the early stages but once they gained confidence they began to create a number of chances and did everything but score. Once again against the run of play Bridge were given too much space and they managed to take a lead. The goal rocked Kellington for a while and only a string of fine saves from keeper John Holland prevented Bridge from increasing their lead .At half time Manager Dale Fenton asked the team to try and switch the mode of attack from down the middle and try and involve Andy Moore on the wing as much as possible. Kellington started brightly again in the second half but after only 10 minutes fell 2 -0 behind to a good Bridge finish. It has become a characteristic over the last 18 months for this Kellington squad to show a “never die” attitude when falling at least 2 or 3 goals behind and once again the team picked themselves up and battled back into the game. Neil Wright, Darren Toes and Andy Moore began to link up well down the right hand side of play and it was Andy Moore who began to tear the Bridge defence apart. With 15 minutes to go Moory crossed for Simon Wooton to finish and was once again the provider for Wootton to score his second with 5 minutes remaining. John Holland was again called into heroics before the full time whistle and forced the game into extra time. Straight from the kick off of extra time the ball was played wide to Andy Moore who beat 3 players and provided a pinpoint cross for Simon Wootton to head home his third goal. Bridge threw everything into attack but could not find a way past John Holland. Late in the second half Dave Rathbone scored from close range to seal an appetising second round tie away to Otley Town

Oct 8th v Airdale B Away Won 2 - 1

Kellington had to make a number of changes to the previous week’s team due to various reasons. Players arriving late at the ground meant that Kellington started the game with only 9 men on the pitch but held Airedale at bay until up to full strength. For a 20 minute spell Kellington were outstanding and played some superb football and were rewarded with 2 brilliant goals. Excellent first time passing between Dave Rathbone, Darren Toes and Ryan Nock led to a ball out wide for Andy Moore who’s first time cross was finished by Dave Rathbone. A carbon copy move 10 minutes later gave Dave Rathbone and Kellington their second goal. After the second goal Kellington seemed to switch off and allow Airedale back into the game. John Holland was again in good form throughout the whole game but could do nothing about the miss-hit shot that got Airedale back into the game. Kellington became ragged in central defence and had to rely on the cover of Richard Stead and John Magyar on a number of occasions. In the second half, chances for Kellington were at a premium as the game became more of a physical battle with every Kellington player standing their ground. Airedale were frustrated firstly by Darren Toes who worked tirelessly in midfield to stem the wave of attacks and then by Dale Fenton who put in a couple of his trademark well timed tackles. In the last minute of the game Chaddy cleared the ball off the line from a corner to secure all 3 points for Kellington.

JAMES SLY TROPHY – FINAL

KELLINGTON v AIREDALE

After reaching the semi – finals of all three cup competitions this season Kellington finally progressed through to the final where they met the first division opposition of Airedale.

The team arrived by minibus ( kindly organised and driven by Andy Ellis ) at the ground an hour before kick off to help familiarise themselves with the pitch and the surroundings. The pitch had been freshly cut and marked out for the occasion and with the weather warm and sunny an excellent afternoon of football was anticipated.

The support from the village was excellent and seeing so many people turn up to watch was an inspiration to the team.

Airedale won the toss and elected to play the first half with what little wind there was behind them and were quickly into there stride creating a couple of good early chances but were thwarted by two excellent saves from John Holland. Kellington suffered a setback after only 15 minutes when left back Neil Chadwick had to leave the field with a leg injury. He was replaced by John Magyar who took up the right back position with Adam Fenton moving across to the left. Kellington responded by applying pressure of their own with Andy Moore taking on the Airedale defence out wide and supplying chances for Simon Wootton and Dave Rathbone who both came agonisingly close to scoring At this point there was a sudden change in the weather conditions and Kellington were forced to play into strong winds and hailstone. As the crowd took cover manager Peter Shann’s instructions were to hold tight and try not to concede a goal before half time. The back four were under immense pressure but Richard Bray, Adam Fenton, John Magyar and James Macmillan all held firm with able support from Darren Toes in midfield. Captain John Holland was forced into action on numerous occasions with some outstanding saves. Kellington finally conceded a goal minutes before half time which was a blow after all the hard work against the elements.

At half time the weather conditions improved and Pete Shann urged his team to have confidence in the ability they had shown all season and to take the game to Airedale in the second half. Kellington took his words on board and started the second half brightly.

The midfield quartet of Darren Toes, Steven Cox, Andy Moore and Ryan Nock were continually getting the better of Airedale who began to resort to familiar strong arm tactics but to no avail as everyone held their discipline. Kellington were rewarded for their efforts midway through the second half when a shot from Dave Rathbone rebounded to the edge of the penalty area where Ryan Nock was at hand to volley the ball into the back of the net. Kellington were in the ascendancy and created more chances but were not able to turn the pressure into goals. There were chances at both ends towards the end of the game but at full time the scores were level and extra time had to be played. Kellington were again the stronger and better team during extra time and the game had to stop several times as many of the Airedale players began to suffer with cramp and injuries.

Extra time finished with no addition to the score and the game had to be decided on a penalty shoot out. Airedale won the toss and decided to take the first penalty which they scored. Dave Rathbone was adamant that he was going to take the first penalty for Kellington and scored with confidence. Airedale’s second penalty was missed and Darren Toes scored to put Kellington in front. Simon Wooton stepped up to take kellingtons third penalty but saw his shot saved only for the referee to order the kick to be taken again because the keeper moved, he made no mistake with his second attempt. Ryan Nock took Kellingtons fourth penalty but unfortunately hit it wide. That left the score at 4 – 4. Steven Cox coolly scored the fifth and when John Holland saved Airedale’s sixth penalty Rich Bray had the chance to win it for Kellington but the Airedale keeper was up to the task and saved it. James Macmillan scored his to make it 6 – 6. John Magyar stood up to the intense pressure and blasted his penalty in to make it 7 – 7. John Holland then pulled off another fine save to give Kellingtons last player, Adam Fenton, who had never had to take a penalty before, the chance to win it. Adam placed the ball on the spot and took three steps back, could he do it? The whistle blew and he stepped forward and hit the ball high and wide to the keepers left and straight into the back of the net to seal a brilliant cup win for Kellington F.C.

Everyone is welcome to call into the Red Lion in Kellington to see the League winner’s trophy and the James Sly trophy on proud display. Kellington are playing in the 1st Division next season and have already got a couple of young players from the village to join us and strengthen the team. Anyone who can kick a ball is welcome to come and join in and there is also room for those who can’t kick a ball to help with training, managing, fund raising and supporting the VILLAGE TEAM who are on the up and up.

Results - January, 2005

Kellington football team continue their winning ways and are now clear leaders in the second division of the Selby League Football Association. The team has played fifteen league matches, winning eleven, drawing three and losing only one and are three points to the better than their closest rivals, Colton. Playing attractive football they have recently beaten Wistow 5-3 away, Drax 12-2 at home and last week beat Black Dog by 4 goals to 2. Promotion is now very much in their sights.

Saturday 26th March

Kellington F.C. beat 1st Division opposition
for the third time this season to progress to the quater final of the James Sly Trophy.

They beat Garforth 4 - 2 after extra time.
Kellington were 1 -0 down until Dave Rathbone scored with a spectacular overhead kick to equalise with 19 minutes to go and take the game into extra time. The score remained the same until the second half of extra time when Richard Bray scored from 1yard out to put Kellington in front only for Garforth to equalise within a minute of the restart. Kellington were then awarded a penalty for handball which Darren Toes converted high to the keepers left to make it 3 - 2. The tie was made safe when Simon Wootton scored an individual goal for Kellington to run out winners 4 -2.

Saturday 2nd April

Kellington F.C. are playing away at Colton in the semi - final of the Hardy Cup.

Match Report

Colton 3 - Kellington 1
Kellington slipped to a disappointing 3-1 defeat in the semi - final of the Hardy Cup. A lapse in defence in the first minute allowed Colton to turn defence into attack and take an early lead. There were very few glimpses of the team that had performed so well the previous week to beat first division opposition. Kellington did manage to equalise after 35 minutes when Andy Moore broke away down the right wing and his pinpoint cross was swept in from 6 yards by Dave Rathbone. With the scores level at half time Manager Pete Shann had stern words with the team in an effort to motivate them for the second half. Both teams had chances to score early before Colton finally took advantage from one of a number of free kicks awarded just outside the penalty area. In the dying minutes as Kellington pushed forward in search of an equaliser Colton broke away to score and seal victory.

Tuesday 5th April

Kellington F.C. are playing away at South Milford where a win will guarentee them winning the 2nd Division title.

Match Report

Kellington was hoping to secure the Division Two league title and win promotion into next year's First Division by securing a win against South Milford. Unfortunately this was not to be, as the result ended in a 2 all draw. Kellington started off very well and secured a 2 goal led at half time. However, when play resumed South Milford were given far too much space to work in which allowed the home team to score 2 goals, the 2nd one being awarded in very controversial circumstances. Kellington did have a number of chances at scoring but unfortunately none were successful.
