Weeks
of preparation were rewarded at Kellington at the weekend,
when the village entertained the officers and men of the
fishery protecton vessel, HMS Kellington. On Saturday
and Sunday mornings, 150 villagers and friends went to
Goole to inspect the ship, which had berthed there especially
for the link - up.
Crew
members answered questions about the ship's equipment;
and a highlight for the children was a ride around the
dock in a motor dinghy.
On
Saturday afternoon the ship's officers and men played
two games of football against a Kellington village side.
One game was drawn 1-1 and Kellington won the other, 2-0.
After
the games, tea was served in the Parish Hall.
In
the evening, village children provided entertainment;
Whitley Drama Group gave a sketch; and items were given
by the Vulcans.
The
ship's captain [Lt Commander Murray Hall] thanked the
performers.
A
dance to the music of Fowler's Band filled the remainder
of the evening.
On
Sunday, the officers and men joined villagers, British
Legion members, Girl Guides, Scouts, Brownies and Cubs,
for a Remembrance Day service in Kellington Church, conducted
by the vicar [the Rev C.A.O.Warman]
The
Mayor and Mayoress of Goole [Ald and Mrs Gosney] and the
Chairman of Osgoldcoss Rural Council [Cllr R Wilson] and
Mrs Wilson were present.
A
white ensign and flagpole given by HMS.Kellington's crew,
were dedicated and wreaths laid by Mr A Eskriett [British
Legion] and by a ship's officer.
The
Church was filled to capacity and many people had to stand.
A
lesson was read by Lt Commander Murray Hall.
The
collection realised £18 15s 2d for the Earl Haigh
Fund.
To
round off a memorable weekend, the officers and ratings
were entertained to tea at the Jolly Miller Inn, where
an iced cake was cut by HMS Kellington's mascot for 1969,
Brenda Jackson [age 10] and a junior rating.
Bouquets
were presented to Mesdames Gosney and Wilson by Miss Jackson.
On
its way to Goole HMS Kellington arrested a Polish trawler
in the North Sea for alleged fishing in British territorial
waters.
The
ship was due to leave Goole on Monday on a journey to
Scotland.

At
Goole Docks on Saturday members of the committee were
entertained to lunch aboard the ship, later they were
shown around by crew members.
In
the afternoon a football match was played on Kellingley
Colliery pitch [by permission of the NCB] between the
village team and a crew X1 and afterwards the committee
entertained them to a tea in the Parish Hall.
This
was followed by a dance at which HMS Kellington Personality
Girl, Miss Tracy England, was presented with a silver
broochby the captain, Lieut.T.Brydon.
On
Sunday, officers and men attended a special seamen's service
at St Edmund's Church conducted by the vicar, the Rev
M. J. Diggle. The address was given by the Rev. R Precious
, of York, the lesson read by the captain and a collection
of £12 was donated to the Missions to Seamen.
On
the Sunday afternoon came the highlight of the weekend
when a version of T.V.'s It's a Knockout was staged on
the Village Green between Kellington Boys, Kellington
Girls, HMS Kellington 'A' and 'B' teams. The MC was Lieut
T. Brydon and the contest was won by Kellington Girls
team.
The
youngest member of the team, Deborah Wilson, received
the trophy given by the ship's company and presented by
the captain. It consists of a ship's bell mounted and
suitably inscribed, and will be on display in the Corner
Shop for the next few days.
Afterwards
the crew were entertained to tea by the committee before
leaving for Goole where the ship is representing the Navy
at the 150th celebration of Goole Docks.
