The pictures in this section have been contributed by people living in Kellington when villagers visited HMS Kellington, and a series of social activities were arranged involving the crew and the village. She visited Goole on November 8th and 9th, 1969, and there were visits to the village by the crew and to HMS Kellington by the villagers. Between the 5th May, 1967 and 6th June 1969 she was at Chatham, and villagers also visited her there. She also visited Goole in 1976.

Perhaps someone who was involved at the time could give details about exactly when and where these particular photos were taken.

There was a further visit made to the village, I believe in 1985, when HMS Kellington returned to the Royal Navy after her time in the RNR. However, this only involved one member of the ship's company and his wife.

If any one can contribute stories or other photos from that time, or can add details about these pictures,

HMS Kellington, and her visits to Goole Docks, taken from Newspaper Cuttings.

Weeks of preparation were rewarded at Kellington at the weekend, when the village entertained the officers and men of the fishery protecton vessel, HMS Kellington. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, 150 villagers and friends went to Goole to inspect the ship, which had berthed there especially for the link - up.

Crew members answered questions about the ship's equipment; and a highlight for the children was a ride around the dock in a motor dinghy.

On Saturday afternoon the ship's officers and men played two games of football against a Kellington village side. One game was drawn 1-1 and Kellington won the other, 2-0.

After the games, tea was served in the Parish Hall.

In the evening, village children provided entertainment; Whitley Drama Group gave a sketch; and items were given by the Vulcans.

The ship's captain [Lt Commander Murray Hall] thanked the performers.

A dance to the music of Fowler's Band filled the remainder of the evening.

On Sunday, the officers and men joined villagers, British Legion members, Girl Guides, Scouts, Brownies and Cubs, for a Remembrance Day service in Kellington Church, conducted by the vicar [the Rev C.A.O.Warman]

The Mayor and Mayoress of Goole [Ald and Mrs Gosney] and the Chairman of Osgoldcoss Rural Council [Cllr R Wilson] and Mrs Wilson were present.

A white ensign and flagpole given by HMS.Kellington's crew, were dedicated and wreaths laid by Mr A Eskriett [British Legion] and by a ship's officer.

The Church was filled to capacity and many people had to stand.

A lesson was read by Lt Commander Murray Hall.

The collection realised £18 15s 2d for the Earl Haigh Fund.

To round off a memorable weekend, the officers and ratings were entertained to tea at the Jolly Miller Inn, where an iced cake was cut by HMS Kellington's mascot for 1969, Brenda Jackson [age 10] and a junior rating.

Bouquets were presented to Mesdames Gosney and Wilson by Miss Jackson.

On its way to Goole HMS Kellington arrested a Polish trawler in the North Sea for alleged fishing in British territorial waters.

The ship was due to leave Goole on Monday on a journey to Scotland.

At Goole Docks on Saturday members of the committee were entertained to lunch aboard the ship, later they were shown around by crew members.

In the afternoon a football match was played on Kellingley Colliery pitch [by permission of the NCB] between the village team and a crew X1 and afterwards the committee entertained them to a tea in the Parish Hall.

This was followed by a dance at which HMS Kellington Personality Girl, Miss Tracy England, was presented with a silver broochby the captain, Lieut.T.Brydon.

On Sunday, officers and men attended a special seamen's service at St Edmund's Church conducted by the vicar, the Rev M. J. Diggle. The address was given by the Rev. R Precious , of York, the lesson read by the captain and a collection of £12 was donated to the Missions to Seamen.

On the Sunday afternoon came the highlight of the weekend when a version of T.V.'s It's a Knockout was staged on the Village Green between Kellington Boys, Kellington Girls, HMS Kellington 'A' and 'B' teams. The MC was Lieut T. Brydon and the contest was won by Kellington Girls team.

The youngest member of the team, Deborah Wilson, received the trophy given by the ship's company and presented by the captain. It consists of a ship's bell mounted and suitably inscribed, and will be on display in the Corner Shop for the next few days.

Afterwards the crew were entertained to tea by the committee before leaving for Goole where the ship is representing the Navy at the 150th celebration of Goole Docks.
