In order to do justice to Ann's beautiful paintings, the reproductions are larger than most images on this site, and will be slow to load - I'm sure you will think they are worth waiting for.

Ann's studio

Art has always played an important part in my life - as long as I can remember I have felt the need to express myself in painting, (albeit as a self-taught amateur). And being a lover of wildlife, the mountains and the countryside, I love to combine these things in traditional paintings.

Ideally of course it would be better to paint outdoors on location, but due to other elements like personal safety (especially in today's world), the weather and carrying all the equipment, it's not really practical unless you're with an organised group. The next best thing is to work from photographs, but not to try and copy them exactly (if this was the case, why not just keep the photo!). However, this isn't as easy as it sounds but I'm working hard at it.

Personally I have learned a lot by working from some of my favourite artists' paintings - something many art tutors frown upon. I don't see anything wrong in it, in fact most of my self teaching has been done via this method. Everyone develops their own style anyway, it's just your own version of someone else's work. But due to copyright laws you're not allowed to sell copies, unless you alter them drastically (so I'm informed).

However, for me it's just a very absorbing hobby. Now and then I've put a few in exhibitions (Ilkley) and am pleased to say I've been quite successful. I'm not too keen on undertaking "commissions" - it's much nicer when someone chooses to have one of your paintings rather than risk being disappointed with something they've asked you to do!

Oil Painting - Kellington Church in the snowstorm of 1980

Bluebell Wood - Watercolour

I worked from one of the paintings of one of my favourite artists, John Wood, for this - I'd had so many failed attempts at trying to paint a bluebell wood from a photograph. Woodland scenes are very difficult to do (in my opinion). So it will be a gift, due to copyright laws mentioned above

North Yorkshire Moors painting

North York Moors - Watercolour

Again, done from one of John Wood's paintings with "my stamp" on it. Another gift - in fact it's now in Australia.

painting of a fox

Fox [oil painting]

I got the idea of this from the book "Bedingfield's Woodlands" - but mainly the colours and atmosphere. The background and the fox are 'mine'.

painting of lavatera

Lavatera [watercolour]

I was quite proud of this - especially the raindrops, which I learned to do from instruction in an art book. I painted it from a photograph in a gardening book and it's hung in a house in Kellington.

Clamatis [watercolour]

I also did this one from a photo in a gardening book and still have it at home.

painting of Mount Rundle, Banff

Mount Rundle, Banff [watercolour]

We stayed in Banff whilst on a skiing holiday in the Rockies, and Mount Rundle could always be seen wherever you were in Banff. I found some beautiful postcards of watercolours done by a "Marilyn Kinsella" and couldn't resist using them. I still have this version of mine at home.

Gathering Bluebells [oilpainting]

I adore bluebells, I adore old-fashioned pictures, and I adore painting in oils! So when I saw the inspiration for this picture on the front of the little Yorkshire magazine "Down Your Way" a few years back, I had to have a go at it. It's probably my favourite, so I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. I altered a few things to what was on the magazine cover, so it's definitely "my version".

The following 2 paintings are both of the Pembrokeshire Coast.

painting - Pembrokeshire Coast

I can't enthuse enough about David Bellamy's paintings (not the conservationist). He's a Welshman and is definitely my favourite artist - I have all his books. He paints in all the wildest places on location - have a look at his website. I wouldn't dare try and sell these, even though they're not much like his versions - could get myself into bother! I have them at home.

Helvellyn - Oils

painting of Helvellyn

This painting was done in the early 80's. It's supposed to be my husband and my brother on Striding Edge on Helvellyn - I simply took the background from a photograph on a postcard. We have this hung at home.
