PARISH COUNCIL - CHRISTMAS

Yes we know it's long gone but we have some thanks to give.
We would like to thank Des Pointon, Haydn Skelton and Harold Potts for the erection and decoration of the Christmas tree and Nigel and Roz Clayton for their help with the power supply. We would also like to say how nice it was that the tree stood there for several weeks and not once were the lights destroyed, as has happened in previous years.
This shows how people of the village are pulling together to make this a nice place to live.
Well done.
And while we are on the subject can we say a big thankyou to Councillor Mike Bray for the decorating of the hall exterior, we think you will agree it looked wonderful.

Also many thanks to Jacqueline and Charles Burkill and anyone who assisted them in the organization of 'Carols round the Christmas tree' . This was once again a thoroughly enjoyable evening and got everyone in the Christmas spirit.

Would you be interested in becoming a Parish Councillor. At the moment we have a vacancy so if you are interested please contact Chairman,Councillor Mike Bray on 01977662219 or speak to any other council member.
The Parish Council meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month in Kellington village hall. Everyone is welcome.

The Parish Council and the Village Hall Committee would like to convey our heartfelt thanks to Paul Banks and his colleagues, of P.A.Banks joiner and building contractors, for all their help and hard work with the renovating and decorating of the village hall.

We would also like to say a big thank you to Sue and Andy Papworth of Kellington Manor for donating the pop and crisps for the party / disco we held for the children in December.
Also thanks to everyone who made and brought food and gave up their time. An enjoyable time was had by all.

The parish council would like to thank the growing number of volunteers who regularly pick up litter, cut grass and generally keep the village looking tidy.
Many thanks you do a great job.

POLICE INFO.PARKING
Parking outside school on Eastfield Lane and the junctions of Manor Garth and Bird Lane is still something of a problem. Please be aware of the highway and try to uphold this before there is an accident .

Please be reminded that Section 243 of the Highway Code states:
DO NOT stop or park :-
Near a school entrance
At a bus or tram stop or taxi rank
Anywhere you could prevent access for Emergency Services

If further complaints are received regarding vehicles causing unnecessary obstruction in these or surrounding areas we will have no alternative but to issue fixed penalty tickets although we would much prefer individuals to simply adhere to the Highway Code.
Your co-operation would be appreciated but should anyone require any further clarification regarding the above please do not hesitate to contact us.

MESSAGE FROM YOUR SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICE TEAM

Concerns have been raised regarding young children playing in the street on Marsh Lane Gardens and Ings Lane. It is alleged that children are kicking balls into gardens and at parked vehicles as well as putting themselves in danger by being oblivious to moving traffic.

Please could we ask all parents to ensure that their children play in a safe and considerate manner and consider allowing their children to use the park for ball games rather than the street.
Your co-operation in this matter would be very much appreciated.

CHURCH NEWS

VILLAGE SHOW
Many Thanks to everyone who organized, donated to, attended or took part in any way in the village show. It was once again a great success and seemed to be enjoyed by all.
PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month in Kellington village hall. Everyone is welcome.

KEN BRYAN
It is with deep regret that we note the death of Ken Bryan. Ken was a true Kellingtonian and served the village in many capacities. He represented the village for several years on the former Osgoldcross Rural District Council until local government re-organisation took place in 1973; He also represented the primary school at Beal on the former Brotherton District sub-committee before schools were allocated their own set of governors. He continued to serve the village as a parish councillor and finally as its clerk.

Ken had a real working knowledge of the village and on several occasions the parish council sought his expert advice on a particular issue. He will be sorely missed by all who
knew him and our thoughts go out to his family.

VOLUNTEERS
The parish council would like to thank the growing number of volunteers who regularly pick up litter, cut grass and generally keep the village looking tidy.
Many thanks you do a great job.

PLAYGROUND
Kellington Play and Recreation Society invite you to our playground consultation evening on Friday 18th September from 3-6 pm in the village hall.
Wii challenge and design a park competition, bouncy castle, graffiti wall, refreshments and raffle. ( raffle tickets are available from any member of the playground committee and in the Post Office).
Meet Helen Horner from Proludic, our play equipment provider, and have your say about our new park.
Any enquiries e-mail Sarah West kellingtonpark@live.co.uk.

VANDALS

The members of the parish council would like to make it quite clear that when the police find the person or persons responsible for the recent spate of theft and criminal damage that has plagued our village over the last few weeks i.e. damage to the school garden including theft of tools, theft of two hanging baskets and damage to the village hall, then we will not hesitate in instructing the police to prosecute the offenders no matter who they are.
This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated in and around our village.

POLICE INFO.PARKING
At the last JAG meeting held on Monday 3rd August concerns were raised regarding parking issues on Eastfield Lane in Kellington. Specific areas of concern were around the school at the beginning and end of the day and around the shop area.
Your Safer Neighbourhood Team would like to remind residents and parents to park considerately and legally in these areas. As the issue was chosen as a local priority the area will be monitored closely.

FIRST RESPONDERS
A first responder is a person who is sent to attend cases of potentially life threatening situations. The first few minutes before the arrival of an ambulance is crucial and in extreme cases this may be the factor which determines the patient's survival. You too could be a life saver. Volunteers are urgently required as we only have one first responder for our local villages at the moment so you really could save a life.

PARISH COUNCIL
It is with much regret that the parish council note the resignation of Des Pointon.
Des has been an invaluable member of the parish council and will be sorely missed by fellow councillors and village residents.
His input into the village has been phenomenal including his part in the refurbishment of the community hall, upkeep of grass verges and reinstatement of footpaths, playing a prominent part in the opposition to the proposed eco-town, keeping a check on street lighting, erecting and decorating the village christmas tree and helping at the discos at the community hall to name but a few.
The parish council and village owe Des a real debt of gratitude and we would like to wish him lots of luck and happy holidays for the future.

This all costs money that could be better spent elsewhere and the people doing this damage are a minority so please be vigilant and report any vandalism, anti-social behaviour or alcohol consumption immediately and let us try and stop these few spoiling our Village.

It has also been reported to the Parish Council that the Church roof has been vandalised and lead flashing stolen. This is unacceptable. If you see anything suspicious please report it immediately.

Several Parish Councillors attended the recent J.A.G (joint action group) meeting which was held in Kellington Village Hall. The J.A.G is made up of representatives from the Police Force, Fire Service, Parish and District Councillors and other groups. These meetings allow Parish Councillors to voice their concerns on local issues. Incidents discussed this month were fly tipping, nuisance off-road motorcycling, traffic problems on the A645, parking on the A19 and under age youths and young adults drinking within Kellington village no-alcohol zone, particularly the village green / hall area.
Two issues were taken up by the group for intense targeting. These were parking in the Hut Green area of Eggborough and alcohol problems in Kellington.
Residents may therefore notice increased Police activity in these areas over the coming months.

If you see or suffer from any vandalism or anti-social behaviour please report it to the police and get an incident number. If you are afraid or would rather not report any issue please contact a Parish Councillor who will gladly do this on your behalf.

Full Governor meetings are held once each term and sub-committee meetings (the joining of which is personal choice) are held at regular intervals. If you would be interested in taking on this fulfilling role please telephone the Head Teacher, Penny Percival, on
01977 661127.

Save Someone's Life ?
Me?

Yes you could save someone's life; someone you may know in your community!

It could be a relative, a friend or just someone you nod to when you meet in the street.

Why not let us train you to prevent someone from dying; the Osgoldcross Forum is looking for volunteers to train as

FIRST RESPONDERS.

What is a first responder? A first responder is trained by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to operate defibrillation equipment.

A co-ordinator would then contact you, say once a week to find out just when you would be available to operate the defibrillation equipment if and when there was an emergency.

Interested? Then telephone the Osgoldcross Forum for further information on 01977 662270.

Make that difference and save someone's life.

VILLAGE HALL UPDATE

The good news is that the first phase of the Village Hall refurbishment is almost complete and so far consists of new ceiling, floor, fitted kitchen, total rewire, heating system, toilets and store room.
Funding recently secured from North Yorkshire Selby Area Committee will enable the fitting of a disabled toilet, staged area, extra storage room and full redecoration of the Hall interior.
The Village Hall committee are very pleased to report that the Hall is being hired on a regular basis by local people for parties etc, outside bodies for meetings, clubs and classes as well as the regular discos being run for 9-14 year olds which have been a great success. The next disco will be on Friday 13th July 7-9 pm. Admission is £1 and pop and sweets will be on sale.
Extended Schools in conjunction with School Friend will run a daily after school club during term time from September.

If you would like to hire the Hall the charges are as follows:-

LOCAL USERS - £ 7:50 PER HOUR
OTHER USERS - £ 10:50 PER HOUR
This includes 30 minutes either side of booking for setting up and clearing away.

Regular bookings and full day bookings are offered at a reduced rate, for further information please call for details.

Kath Newton 01977662749
Jan Pointon 01977661547
Jane Howard 01977662295

DOWN SIDE

The bad news is that vandals continue to destroy the pipework at the rear of the Hall, which is soul destroying for the people who have worked hard to make the Hall the place that it has now become and the people who have to constantly try to repair the damage.
If you see any untoward activity at the rear of the Village Hall please contact the Police or a member of the Parish Council or Hall Committee.

ADIE'S MARATHON

This is a piece written by Bry on my behalf. Many thanks to those who took the time to sponsor me, write newsletters, come out on the day etc etc.

Cheers Adie

A great weekend was had by all in London and we would like to thank anyone who has supported Adie through his special day !
Special thanks to Becky D who became a personal tour guide on Saturday for James and I round the Natural History Museum and provided a cracking picnic on Sunday too !
To Matt Gaynor, Wiggy, Big Al and his son Billy who traipsed around the tube network trying to track Adie down and especially to Dave Woolmer who watched from the comfort of the pub next to the course ! ! !
Bry, Adie and James.

VOLUNTEERS WORK PAYS OFF

Volunteers dug to reinstate the footpath out of the village towards Eggborough which led to it being tarmacked which in turn has led to the laying of a footpath linking Kellington with Eggborough along the A645. This is great news and shows what a small group of volunteers can achieve. Well done.

Also many Thanks to Vicky McLauchlan and Diane Caine for taking on the upkeep of the village signs. If these are kept looking nice the Village looks cared for and welcoming to residents and visitors alike so well done to these two willing volunteers.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

It seems to be a distant memory, but the festivities around the tree went so well with over 200 people attending. The mulled wine was more potent than ever and the mince pies were excellent. The Parish Council would like to thank all those who made it such a wonderful experience. A big thank you goes to the Selby Scout and Guide Band, Keith and Pauline from the corner shop, Nigel, Charles and Jackie, Hayden and Des.

The tree stood without incident through the whole of the festive season. Next year we intend to expand the festive lighting and look at putting other lights around the village. A big thank you for sponsoring the lights goes to the Red Lion

VILLAGE HALL

The first phase of the hall refurbishment is now almost complete and the hall is now available to hire for parties, meetings etc. The hall is now double glazed and has central heating; a full electrical rewire was undertaken along with the installation of a new kitchen, new toilets, new floor and a new ceiling. Bookings have already begun to role in and the Committee would like to thank everyone for supporting them in their quest to keep the Parish Community Hall open and in regular use and fulfil the aims of the Parish Plan to make the building a focal point of our community.

There is still a lot to do and the Committee would like to thank Paul Banks and Lee Bailey who were the main contractors in this initial phase of the hall refurbishment.

The works so far have been funded by WREN and EPAC with significant contributions from local businesses including M H Poskitt Farmers, Hodges & Partner Builders, Euro Auctions and UK Coal.

So the future of the hall rests in three ways:

· The hall committee need more members to help run the hall. You won't be asked to open and lock up, but help with planning the future of the hall is needed. The committee meet monthly for a light hearted enjoyable meeting. If you are interested please contact Kath on 01977 662749.

· If you have a function or a party to plan then as a resident you receive a discount on hire fees. If you are a resident its just £7.50 an hour. The future lies in the hall being used. It's really pleasant in there now and it's going to get better and better. So come and have a look at what's happening!

· What do you want the hall to provide? The first phase has given us a sound basis to work from. It is now warm, dry, clean and safe. We need to get your feedback on what you want to see happen in the future.

THEY WILL BE BACK!

Yorkshire Water volunteer group, who did a fabulous job tidying the area around the village hall, may be back in the village to tidy the area at the back of the village green known as The Orchard. This area has been overgrown for many years and is an eyesore. Mr Guy Poskitt has been very helpful in helping us in this matter

PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Ever wondered how the Parish Council works or what they do, then now is your chance to do things the way you want in our village. The whole of the Council is up for election in May. So if you want to know more then come along and see. The Council is made up of seven residents to serve the village. There are a few Councillors who have stated they will not be standing for re election. So please find out more and help the Parish Council to help our village.

For more information contact Richard Fogden Clerk to the Parish Council by either calling 01977 702097 or email Arrky@aol.com

NO ALCOHOL ZONE IS WORKING

Following a number of complaints regarding youths in our village drinking on the green and around the village hall, the Police have responded and confiscated alcohol and warned the offenders that further breaches of the zone will result in prosecution. So now it's working so please keep reporting these the incidents to the Police on 0845 6060247.

COMMUNITY GOVERNOR

Kellington Primary School is looking for somebody to join their Governing Body as a Community Governor. The role of Community Governor is someone who would represent the community interests, be committed to the good governance and success of the school and become a 'critical friend'. A Community Governor should not have a child at the school. Full Governor Meetings are held once each term and sub-committee meetings (the joining of which is personal choice) are held at regular intervals. If you would be interested in taking on this fulfilling role please telephone the Head Teacher, Penny Percival, on 01977 661127.

PLEASE HELP ME RAISE MONEY FOR ASTHMA UK!

Main Street resident Adie Turford a postman famous on his round for only wearing shorts (on his legs) is a keen runner as well as having asthma. He is running the Flora London Marathon to raise money for Asthma UK as he and his young son both suffer from the condition.

Adie has set an ambitious target of £1500 and with your help we are sure he can do it!
If you feel you would like to support Adie you can either contact him via his page on the Just Giving website where you can sponsor him directly.

The website is www.justgiving.com/adiesmarathon. Keith and Pauline are also holding a sponsor form in the Corner Shop or alternatively you can contact Adie directly via adiesmarathon@tiscali.co.uk. Please support this worthwhile cause.

TAXI

At last a taxi that will take you home. Main street resident Chris Whitley has started a new business of "Kellington Cars". His six seater taxi is available for airport runs, stag parties, nights out, shopping trips and any other occasions. Chris operates all day and provides booster seats for smaller children. Chris can be contacted on 07731807736.

Dawn apologies but the usual entertainment arranged at the Lion has been suspended as there have been a number of complaints of people making a noise around the Lion late at night. If you getting out of a taxi or walking home after a night out in the village please can you keep the noise down as it disturbs our neighbours and we are being blamed. October 2006

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE IDIOTIC
Let's start off with the bad - Vandalism in the village was the usual list of bus shelter glass smashed twice in a week, goal posts stolen, seals removed from the bus shelters, workmen's toilet continually knocked over and damaged, cans and rubbish left littering the village hall and green.

Now the Good - We would really like to thank all of those villagers that spend time picking up the litter and rubbish from the footpaths and the village green and thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help improve our village.

Now for the Idiotic - It is ok to think you can get away with things if you are a bit intelligent, however, when you smear pizza and chips over the bus shelters and the village hall it would be a really good idea to make sure that the delivery note with your name and address on is not left with the empty boxes!! So yes we do know who you are and we also know who removed the seals from the bus shelter.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
Please affix stickers into your windows and report anything suspicious on 0845 6060247. This number will put you through to the Control Room at York, who will then guide you through to Selby Police Station. We will be setting up a Neighbourhood Watch Programme in our village shortly. Watch village notice boards for further information.

CAROLS ROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Yes, we know it is only October but it is fast approaching that time of year and our excuse is that they have been selling mince pies in Asda since August! We are pleased to announce that with the support of the Guides, Browines and Rainbows and the Selby Scout and Guide Band, our annual Carols around the Christmas Tree will be held on Friday 1 December at 7.00 pm. Mulled wine and mince pies will be available and we look forward to seeing you there.

NEWS FROM THE GUIDES

Firstly our congratulations go to Jackie Burkhill who has been appointed as District Commissioner for our area for the Guides, Brownies and Rainbows. This appointment is for three years and is well deserved for Jackie's tireless work to support this wonderful movement that is so popular within our village. Once again well done Jackie.

Three of our Guides have received a letter from Buckingham Palace congratulating them on their efforts to illustrate a book mark to support the Guides Go For It Peace Initiative. They were Elizabeth and Victoria Appleyard and Kate Turton.

The Guides have adopted the planters around the village this autumn as part of their Community Action Plan. This is just another demonstration of the wonderful work this group do within our community.

KEEP THE CAR AT HOME MUM

Kellington Primary School has had fitted a cycle rack to encourage children to use alternative means of transport to school. You may have seen our youngsters training for their cycling proficiency award. This is to ensure they are safe on the roads in our village.

A BIG THANK YOU FROM THE SCHOOL

B&Q have donated £270.00 worth of materials to the school that will be used in the construction of the Global Awareness Garden. This environmental project will teach children about the sustainability and environmental impact will have on our planet. Other activities in the Global Awareness Garden are the construction of butterfly and bird boxes to attract the wildlife into this environment.

ROADWORKS

As you read this newsletter hopefully Main Street will be closed and being resurfaced. We have been informed that the road will be closed between the 9th and 27 October, however North Yorkshire Highways are hopeful the work will be completed earlier. They apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and will endeavour to maintain vehicular access to properties.

FOUL PLAY

Football posts for the village green were kindly donated by the school and for a short time it was great to see all ages mixing together to play football. It proved there is a need for the Parish Council to provide some football posts for the children. Then they were nicked! Not surprising you may think but many villagers including those normally blamed for antisocial behaviour were annoyed. They were stolen in the middle of the night and at a rough guess were weighed in for there scrap value.

However the Parish Council are bidding for funds to get similar sized posts fixed in place as soon as possible.

VILLAGE HALL UPDATE

Well the windows have been replaced and as I write this newsletter the stage and rear wall are being removed in this first phase of refurbishment. This will allow a new floor to be laid after all the floor joists have been repaired. This will swiftly be followed by a full electrical rewire, a new kitchen and a newly constructed store room. Central heating and new toilet facilities are also being installed.

As stated earlier, this first phase of work will make the hall is safe and warm and the next phase is already being planned. If you would like to have a say in what should be included then contact the Village Hall Management Committee or even join this band of volunteers who operate the hall. They can be contacted by calling Kath on 662749.

The village hall is going from strength to strength and booking is easy by calling Vicky on 663790.

One strange and final point is the Vicar (Father Colin) did receive a letter saying that the hall is not properly insured??? Due to the letter being anonymous he can not respond, so we will. Yes the hall is insured and a copy of the insurance certificate is displayed for all to see in the village hall. Village News

Alcohol free Area

You will hopefully noticed that the signage for the depicting the alcohol free zones are now in place. That means anyone consuming alcohol in the designated areas are liable for prosecution and any alcohol being confiscated. The maximum fine is £500. This is enforced by the Police and you should contact 0845 24760606 to report any non compliance. This has been introduced as a direct result of villager's request.

Pamper Evening

£103 was raised for the school finds after a successful pamper evening for parents and friends of the school by the parent teachers association. The manicures and pedicures and other treatments were well received and a good evening was had by all. Many thanks to all that supported this event.

Notice Boards

Two new village notice boards are now in place in our village. One has been erected at the school and the other has replaced the original on Main Street. The Parish Council would like to thank Yorkshire water for their sponsorship. The old notice board is being reused to provide village hall information and will be sited in the near future.

Street Lighting

The Parish Council has been trying to resolve street lighting throughout the village since the previous contractor gave notice last year. We are pleased to announce that AMEY Street lighting have been commissioned to upgrade and maintain the street lights that are under the responsibility of the Parish Council. This work will be starting this month. Here is the AMEY 24 hour call centre 0800 783 1654. Residents should note the column no and or the address and postcode of the lamp standard and mention KELLINGTON.

Main Street

John Hodgson of North Yorkshire County Council Highways has confirmed that the resurfacing works promised last year in Main Street will begin this month. Although this will cause some inconvenience work should be quickly completed.

Village Hall Update

As we have made you aware in previous village newsletters the hall is now under the independent management of the Village Hall Committee. The first task undertaken by them was the village hall cleanup operation. Well what a difference that made and a big thank you to all that helped and supported the project. We had cleaners, electricians, joiners and lots of grafters, all supported with some wonderful cakes, sandwiches and chips supplied by the chip shop. This hard work and efforts has made the hall useable and the project to refurbish the entire building is underway with Richard Fogden securing grant funding from Area Fund, Epac and Coalfields Trust to a value of £27,000 with more funds applied for.

The village hall committee are seeking ideas from residents of any community events villagers would like to see take place in the hall (summer fayre Carrot festival etc).

The hall is now hosting a number of activities but if you want to hire the hall then please contact Victoria on 01977 663790 or Kath 01977 662749.

Table Top Sale

Get rid of your clutter. The village hall committee are putting on a table top sale on Saturday May 6th. So here is your chance to rid yourself of all the things you have accidentally bought on Ebay. Tables are £5 each and can be booked by contacting Sally on 01977 663294. Raffle and Refreshments will be available. So either come and rid yourself of clutter or come and try and bag a bargain.

AGM of Parish Council

The annual general meeting of the Parish Council will take place on 15th May 2006. Please come along and support the Council or have your say. The meeting begins at 7:30pm at the Village Hall.

Mini Garden Competition

The guides are organising a mini garden competition to celebrate the Queens 80th birthday
On 10thJune 2006. The doors will open at 10:00am and all entries will need to be registered by 11:00am to be judged.

The Mini garden should be tea tray sized and can include plants, flowers, vegetables, pebbles, dried flowers or anything imaginative. There are categories for age groups and prizes for the most imaginative and colourful displays.

Entries are only a pound. Raffles and refreshments are available. The proceeds of this event will be donated to Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.

Dog Mess

The amount of dog fouling on the pavements around the village is unacceptable. Please clear up after your dog as our children's health is at risk. Dog mess can be put in any bin around the village as long as it is in a bag. Please help us to rid the village of this problem. Remember you can be fined for leaving dog mess on the village footpaths.

Race for Life

St Edmunds Guides Kellington and a number of residents are supporting "TESCO Race for Life" in aid of cancer research. This is a 5km walk or run that will be taking place in Pontefract 18th June and Doncaster on 25th June. Please support all taking part from our village.

St Georges Day March

The Guides trained for the ST Georges day celebrations at Fulford Barracks York to brush up on their drill and marching skills. The St George's day parade left the Civic Centre in Selby at 2:30pm on 23rd April and ended with a special service at the Abbey.

Unbelievable

The only word that can describe the madness of the idiot who threw a bottle at the bus on Main Street on Friday afternoon. The bottle went through the window and injured a passenger. The incident happened at around 4:00pm. If you have any details or information please contact the Police on 0845 606060247.

School Christmas Fayre

The Christmas Fayre at Kellington School raised over £620 in support of school funds. The many types of activities included stalls, raffles and a Santa grotto. The event organisers would like to thank all involved who took par and supported this wonderful community event.

That Was The Week That Was!

We had the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows the first week in December. The first low was the madness of the village idiots who for some reason took it upon themselves to wreck the Christmas tree. A comment from those of us who take time to write this newsletter and provide the Christmas tree is "If you are one of the idiots then you should be ashamed, if you know who the idiots are and did not tell anyone you are as guilty". Our thanks go to the corner shop for displaying a notice that said it all.

Well then it got better!!

Our Post Lady Adele, got sent on a training course (this is Post Office speak for relocation we believe), but after a overwhelming response from our village Adele is back permanently. Not only did most of the Parish Council become TV celebrities for the day (Eric is on the next Big Brother), Richard our Parish Clerk was interviewed by BBC Radio for Canada. We are glad to have you back Adele.

Then it went even better!

The Carols around the Christmas tree was a great success this year thanks to the hard work and perseverance by Jackie, Pauline, Keith (mulled wine specialist!), Charles and the Guides. The Selby Scouts and Guide Band accompanied the singing and the refreshments made the whole evening a superb village event. Over 130 people attended.

Then they returned and wrecked the lights again and again. Someone must be proud of them!!! The site of two small children crying because the lights did not work must make them feel really clever. They are pathetic. If you see anyone acting to damage property or acting antisocially then call the Police on 0845 6060247

Village Precept

The village precept has been set to increase the income of the Parish Council so we can provide funding to deliver a number of projects. The rise will be around 19p per week (less than £10 per year) on the average household in the village, the Council will develop the village hall with its management committee, continue to improve the grass cutting within the village, improve village street lighting, signage, notice boards and pathways to name but a few.

The Parish Council will continue to support local groups that make village life better for all sections of the community (senior citizens groups to toddlers). We will continue to identify grants and other funding sources to improve the village (as identified in the Parish Plan).

The accounts will be published at the end of the financial year (March 2006) and are independently audited inline with financial regulations. We thank you for your continued support.

Lights Are Part Of The Answer

A meeting at the School that was attended by District, Parish Councillors, residents and our MP John Grogan to discuss the problems of antisocial behaviour in our community, the Police that were also present reported that over 54 crimes had been logged in our village since October; this has led to an increased Police presence and a quieter time for most of us. In the meeting it was identified that street lighting is an issue. The Parish Council has been aware of this issue (Parish Plan) and had already commissioned a survey from a leading public sector lighting organisation on the lights operated by the Council, and we await the report. We will be improving the lighting and we will be looking at the following key issues:

· Improved lighting
· Reduced energy consumption
· Quicker responses to repairs and breakdowns
· Ensuring continued high levels of street lighting through planned maintenance and replacement programme.

The meeting also identified a need for a greater number of rubbish bins in key areas. However we need to deal with the problems as they arise and the best way of ensuring the Police deal with the root problem (dealing with the offenders) is to contact the Police and report them on 0845 6060247.

The Parish Council is acting on the views expressed in the Parish Plan to reduce the antisocial behaviour in our village. We would like to thank all who took the time to attend the meeting and progress this important issue.

Alcohol Free Area

Following the public meeting at the school late last year the No Alcohol Zone has now been agreed and will cover the entire parish of Kellington, including the Churchyard. The final part of the procedure is that Tim Grogan (Selby District Council) will place an advert in the local press and will write to all concerned i.e. licensees in the village, Parish Council, Parish Church and Post Office. Anyone who wishes to object has 28 days from the display of the public notices.

This is in support of the residents wishes who attended the meetings and again supports the views identified in the Parish Plan.

Bus Shelters

It's not quite what we asked for but everyone is happy with it. The final comment on the new bus shelter is its here and people like it. We would like to thank all involved for their help and support in resolving this long running saga. The Parish Council listened to those who attended the meeting and we have what we asked for apart from it's the wrong way round. If you see any of the village idiots abusing the shelters please contact the Police on 0845 6060247

Village Hall

It belongs to the Village. There has been a meeting of those interested in being involved in the management of the village hall. Further meetings will be held so it's not too late, so if you are interested in helping out contact Vicky McLauchlan 663790, Jane Howard 662295, Sally Harvey 663294 or Kath Newton 662749.

The hall will be operated by the committee with links to the Church, School and the Parish Council. A significant amount of funding is being sought to improve the facilities and it is planned that the hall will return to being the focal point of the village. The hall is still available for bookings and the costs are unchanged. If you would like to use the hall bookings can be made by contacting Vicky or Sally at the contact numbers above.

Scrubbers Required!!!. As we said its now our Village hall so we need volunteers to help out getting it into shape. We are asking for all types of help from cleaning to painting to minor repairs or someone to keep the volunteers supplied with tea and coffee. If you can spare some time we really would appreciate it. The spring clean will take place between 12:00 - 4:00pm on Saturday 4th February.

All help will be welcomed

It Really Is Foul!!

A number of residents have complained that dog mess is again becoming a regular problem on the footpaths around the village. Mrs Percival at the school has expressed concerns that children are regularly walking the mess into the school. There are a number of bins around our village so please take a bag and clean it up for the sake of the health of our children.

Parish Plan
The plan has now been published and was distributed to every household in December. If you have not received a copy please contact any member of the Parish Council.

Historical Snippet

Beal School Log Book entry made in 1877, only 6 months after the school opened.

23 October: "Having had a complaint from a man that boys before school time pulled down his master's hedge in order to provide them with sticks I spent 15 minutes this morning in trying to show the boys the danger and cautioned them not to enter the surrounding fields. Arthur Smith and Henry Jackson having in their possession sticks so obtained I caused them to return the sticks to their owner".

24 October. "Thomas Edward, having insulted a man who passed the school during dinnertime and the man having complained was told to go and beg the man's pardon which he did at once".

Problem children existed 129 years ago!!

Next Parish Council Meeting

The next Parish Council meeting is on Wednesday 15th February 2006 at 7:30pm. All welcome at the Village Hall.

November/December 2005

Kellington Village News, November, 2005

Bus Shelters
In an attempt to put clarity on the position and the role the Parish Council has on the new bus shelters. The village has been fortunate to have the bus shelters replaced on Main Street. Unfortunately this was done without consultation with the residents. The Parish Council has been working with North Yorkshire County Council in improving the provision of bus shelters and had asked for a number of options to be put forward. This had not been understood by NYCC who removed the existing shelters and tried to reposition the lower Main Street shelter on land adjacent to the Post Office. It would be easy for the Parish Council to blame NYCC and likewise, however the need to put the situation in order is more pressing. We asked via notices in the village notice board, website and notice in the corner shop window for residents to forward preferences to the Parish Council Clerk by 20th October 2005. At the recent Parish Council meeting all of the letters received indicated that residents wished for the original shelter to be replaced. This was supported by vote of both public and council members and was agreed by a significant majority.

The Parish Council would like to thank Cllr McCartney and Cllr Gillian Ivy in helping to resolve this matter.

Christmas Concert and Lights
It's only a few weeks away so let's get ready to celebrate. The village Christmas tree will be in place the first week in December and additional Christmas lights will be displayed in trees on the corner of Eastfield and Ings Lane (by the Red Lion). The lights were very well received last year and made the Carol Concert (attended by over 120 people) a tremendous success. This year's concert organised by Kellington Guides with assistance from the Parish Council will be held around the tree on Friday 2nd December and will start promptly at 7:00pm. The Selby Scouts band will be accompanying the singing and all are welcome. Seasonal refreshments will be available with all proceeds going to support the village Guide pack.

Let There Be Light.
It's dark in here!! There has been a number of street lights out in the village. The Parish Council are working with their contractor and North Yorkshire County Council Street Lighting to ensure all lights are back in service as soon as possible. If you know of any lights that are not working please call Clerk of the Council on 01977 702097 who will ensure the light is reported for repair as soon as possible. Please note that all street lights that are marked with yellow box and black numerals are the responsibility of North Yorkshire County Council all others are the responsibility of the parish Council.

All Change at the Red Lion
It is with great sadness that we announce that Dave and Rose will be leaving the Red Lion in mid November. They have both been tremendous in developing the village spirit and raising the position of the Red Lion to the community of the village. We wish them great success in their new venture.

Telephone Box
The Parish Council has been pressing British Telecom to remove the phone box from Manor Garth. The box has been subject to horrendous vandalism over the past few years. Before we present a case to BT to remove the box we welcome any objections of residents. Please contact the Clerk of the Parish Council at 3 North Ives Pontefract WF81HN or 01977 702097 or email Arrky@aol.com.

Police Presence
Following pressure from the Parish Council there has been a significant improvement in the presence of Police Community Support Officers in and around the village. The village has been subject to significant vandalism to walls, cars and the new bus shelters by youths from Knottingley and Brayton. The continued supports of these officers are welcome and are already paying dividends in apprehending these thugs. If you see or experience any type of anti social behaviour then please contact 0845 6060247. We don't have to put up with this so let's do something about it together.

Alcohol free Area
Cllr John McCartney is promoting the proposal to introduce no alcohol zones in Eggborough and Kellington. This will not allow the consumption of alcohol in public areas of the village. This will include clear defined signage to where the consumption of alcohol is strictly not allowed and the consequences of none compliance. This matter will now be progressed by the Police, Parish Councils and interested members of the public and will be coordinated by Selby District Council Officer Tim Grogan. When the zone is agreed an advert in the local press will be displayed allowing objections to be raised and 28 days later the zone is in force (subject to objections). Selby Community Safety partnership pays for the signs advertising the zones. We welcome your views on this so please contact either Cllr McCartney or Clerk of the Parish Council at 3 North Ives Pontefract WF81HN or 01977 702097 or email Arrky@aol.com. Future public meeting on this matter will be publicised.

Election of Councillors
Parish Councillors receive no income or expenses and play a voluntary community role. The majority of current Councillors are co opted to the council as there has been little or no interest previously by residents. The Parish Council now has a clear mandate from the village in the Parish Plan (to be distributed this month). The members of the Council have by majority decided they will all go for formal election in May next year to allow a democratic vote to elect a new council.

If you are interested in standing for election or have an interest on what the Council do and how it functions then why not come along to our meetings and find out a more. We will let you know how to put your name forward in this newsletter and via the village website early next year.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 14th December at 7:30pm at the School.

Village Hall
The village hall was identified in the Parish Plan as the main area residents wanted to be improved to develop community spirit. The Parish Council has signed a lease from the Parochial Church Council to run the village hall via an independent committee from January 1st 2006.

This committee will be able to attract significant grant funding from a number of sources to improve the village hall. It is intended that the hall will be available for community and social events as well as educational and health and welfare promotion.

If you would be interested in helping out or being part of the independent Village hall committee then please contact the clerk of the council on 01977 702097 or write to 3 North Ives Pontefract WF81HN or email Arrky@aol.com.

It is recognised that the hall will need significant improvement and there will be a delay before the grant funding will allow works to be completed. In order to improve the hall we will be having a number of days where residents can volunteer their services. So if you have skills that can be used or you want to help please call Des Pointon on 01977 661547.

We already have had significant success at what is becoming locally known as Des's Army (village footpaths etc) please come along and help the Kellington volunteers.

Just a quick thanks to others who helped clear the footpaths in the summer, they are Charles Birkill, Jacqui Birkill and Chris Rowbottom. Please accept our apologies for the original omission.

Friday Assembly
Parents, Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles and friends of children attending Kellington Primary School enjoyed an afternoon assembly at the school on Friday 21st October. The assembly included all classes who presented their work by video, story, art and small plays. The theme of the afternoon was making poverty history. The whole of the school took part and the event was a great success. Some of the pictures included in this wonderful event can be seen on the village web site.

The school also hosted a wonderful art exhibition which raised £150 for the schools "Send a Cow to Africa Appeal" and school fund. £150 had already been raised at harvest which means we can buy Sengwer Aid cow - a very worthwhile cause. If you missed the art exhibits they are to be displayed on Kellington's website!

Parish Plan
The plan has now been published and will be distributed to every household later this month. An official launch will be held before Christmas to which all residents are welcome. Further information on time and date will be published via the website and notice boards.

Next Parish Council Meeting
The next Parish Council meeting is on Wednesday 14th December at 7:30pm all welcome at the School.

Roses Grow In This!

The Parish Council have received many complaints that horse muck is becoming a regular feature on paths and roads around Manor Garth and other parts of the village. We all accept that horses and the countryside go hand in hand but Manor Garth is not known for growing many crops. Horse riders are respectfully asked to let their horses deposit their valuable loads in more appropriate areas.

Bang Goes the Phone Box

The Parish Council has asked British Telecom to consider the future viability of the phone box in Manor Garth. The phone box has been constantly vandalised over the last twelve months. The most recent explosive attack left the phone completely useless. If you have a view on retaining this village asset please contact the Parish Council. If you have any information on this or any other attacks of vandalism box please inform the police on 01757 702596.

Do You Think This is Anti Social Behaviour?

It's always depressing, like the shortening daylight, when the number of annoying things begin to deteriorate our peaceful village life. It's sometimes not easy to decide what is anti social behaviour and what isn't. So here for your delight or dismay are the latest of some mind numbing activities that have occurred in our village:

· Vandalism to the village hall and the depositing of litter.
· Idiotic riding of motorcycles (if the cap fits wear it).
· Digging up of road surfaces causing a serious trip hazard.
· Fireworks damaging phone box (this act is illegal, it is a criminal act to use fireworks before November).
· Personal abuse to residents.

It really is a shame that those responsible have not got the intelligence to realise how pathetic the rest of us consider them to be. These are isolated incidents that have all been passed onto the Police. So don't put up with it report it. The local Police Officer can be contacted on 01757 702596.

To ignore this stupidity means you support it!

South African Experience

After returning from a fantastic five and a half weeks stay in Port Elizabeth, South Africa I would like to share some of my experiences. After my arrival we were taken to our accommodation in one of the wealthy parts of the city. The wealthy parts of South African cities are just like any nice city centre back in the UK. This did not prepare us for some of the poverty stricken areas that we would be working in. The township areas and shantytowns made up a large percentage of the area of Port Elizabeth in comparison to the wealthier areas. People were living with up to ten people in a shack no bigger than your average sized garden shed, and with no such thing as a refuse collection people were living in their own rubbish. It is still evident that although apartheid ended some years ago, racism and the class difference between blacks and whites still exists in a big way.

In general the schools I worked in were in reasonable condition, although with very limited resources, There was one school however called Missionvale Primary that still didn't have running water and when the children were examined a week before my arrival one in four of the children tested positive for HIV.

It was amazing that in these areas the children showed lots of enthusiasm towards going to school and participating in sport. They knew of no different way of life and had adapted to it. Even the poorest British person would have great difficulty living in those conditions. Due to this enthusiasm coaching rugby was very enjoyable and very easy, even in the areas where a limited amount of English was spoken and in the areas where basic rugby skills were non-existent. I did however spot a lot of potential amongst the children and if developed properly (which is very unlikely) could make excellent players.

Whilst in South Africa I appeared in the national newspaper "The Herald" because the editor found my website and decided to do an article on my work in the country.

Whilst in South Africa I have made a lot of new friends from both the UK and South Africa. We have had a lot of free time, which I put to good use. We coached Monday to Friday 10.00- 15.00hrs so this gave us most of the afternoon and weekends to ourselves. I played Rugby Union over there for two of the local teams and was made very welcome. I was also lucky enough to visit Cape Town, go on safari, test out the surf, and not forgetting the amazing nightlife Port Elizabeth had to offer.

I have had the best experience of my life. Now I am back I would just like to thank all those who supported me and made my trip possible. I would like to thank the Parish council for their donation and also Kellington Primary School for their collection of pens and pencils that are been put to good use in several poor schools. Others I wish to thank are ND Tec, Caddick Developments and several of the rugby league and union teams for their donations. I also had several friends and family in the village that have helped in many ways.

Street Lighting
Selby District Council with Community Safety Partnership has committed £35000 this year across the district to improve street lighting in an attempt to reduce crime and give us safer environments to live. If you have concerns that street lighting needs improvements in your part of the village contact either your District Councillor or the Parish Council on the numbers at the end of this newsletter, they will apply on your behalf. All applications need to be in by the 31st August 2005. We will let you know where we have been successful in getting improved lighting in future newsletters.

Idiot Season Begins Again
The Village Hall has been damaged by idiots who broke in and caused mindless damage. If you have any information on who may have been involved please call Selby Police on 01904 631321. It's our village so why put up with it?

In Contrast
Children from the new Nursery and Class A at Kellington Primary recently enjoyed a morning strole around the village culminating in play on the village green. Thanks to all parents who supported Mrs Brew and Mrs McKenzie in making this happen. How pleasant is that compared to the item above?

Blooming Marvellous

Betty Bell has maintained the planters and village road signs for a number of years but has recently retired. The Parish Council would like to thank her for her dedicated service to the village. Betty's work will be continued thanks to the Sally Harvey volunteering to maintain the road signs and the School Gardening Club adopting the planters. The Parish Council intends to continue to invest in plants and village upkeep that supports the Gardening Club from the School and Sally. If you have any comments or would like to help please contact the Parish Council.

WOW What a Response
We asked if you could spare a couple of hours to help clear the footpath between the Red Lion and Beal junction and lots of you did!! Judging from feedback from residents through the web site and comments in the village everyone considered the task a great success. Cllr Des Pointon commented that lots of people said they wish they had come forward to help; well now here is your chance!!!

The next project is to reinstate the footpath from Meadow Lodge to Weeland Road (if we can find it) this footpath has disappeared and we have had a number of complaints that villagers feel in danger as they walk to and from Eggborough.

So, if you still have the guilty feeling here is your chance to help (even five minutes will do). Des is planning the job to start on first week in July. It was a fun and sociable occasion that has obvious rewards.

The Parish Council would like to thank all of those that helped in the first project and we look forward to seeing you on this job. For more information call Des on 01977 661547.

Eggborough Power Station Cricket Club Builds on Success
Eggborough Power Station Cricket Club has started the new season in the same positive manner that they completed last when they were promoted to 5th Division Pontefract League. A superb result against top of the table Whitley Bridge saw the team win by four wickets. Simon Shann added to his previous games hat trick against Royston with three wickets being taken in four balls. Well done Simon.

Support for the Village
The Parish Council wishes to thank Cllr McCartney for distributing the "Got a Problem" leaflet. If you have not received your copy through your letter box please contact Cllr McCartney who will be happy to arrange for yours to be delivered.

Refuse Collection and Recycling Reminder
Your domestic wheelie bin will not be emptied if the lid is not closed or if it is contaminated with garden green waste, which should be in your green wheelie bin. Your garden green bin cannot be emptied if it is contaminated with domestic rubbish. Selby District Council's Recycling Hotline 01757 292225. Kellington kerbside recycling dates are alternative Fridays - 8th July, 22 July etc. Bins are for the following uses: Green box: paper and card. Blue box: glass and cans. Garden green wheelie bin: grass cuttings, weeds etc.

Historical Snippet of Information!

Beal School Log Book 8th October 1878. Entry by Henry E Storey (First Head of the School). "at five minutes past four today when having sent all of the children home, I was explaining to the second standard how to do their home lessons, a women came to the door and in very loud tones called to her girl "Annie come her". She then began to shout and threaten me and that in the presence of my children; if I ever kept her girl after four pm again she herself would come again with her husband with her and take her out of school. She also inferred that I myself should not be safe. Having concluded my explanation I let the children, her girl amongst those children, go at ten minutes past four. The women went away screaming in the road. She has been twice to school before for paltry reasons.

Some things never change!!!

Village Precept: What We Intend To Do This Financial Year

Following information from the parish plan that is due to be published for all residents next month, the Parish Council intends to support the following projects in this financial year:

· Redevelopment of the village green including improved sports and play equipment in partnership with the Groundwork trust (Selby).
· Replacement bus shelters for the village in partnership with North Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority.
· Refurbishment of the village hall and the creation of an independent village hall management committee to run the hall for the benefit of the village with support from the parochial church council.

In addition the Council will be continuing to support local groups including sports and youth groups as well as the senior citizens. We intend to develop the well received Christmas decorations and festivities that were a fabulous joint effort by so many within the village.

Volunteers Needed

Can you spare a couple of hours to help clear the footpath between the Red Lion and Beal junction. Cllr Des Pointon is co-ordinating the job so if you can spare some time please call Des on 661547.

New Bridge

Following comments from a number of residents we would like to point out that the Parish Council did not fund the replacement of the bridge but Cllr Beechey was instrumental in getting the replacement following the mindless destruction of the previous footbridge. The funding and project management of the replacement were courtesy of the Area Four Committee of North Yorkshire County Council, however this money could have been better spent on building improved stiles and the placement of new footpath markers.

Parking Courtesy

More complaints have been received regarding poor parking of cars on footpaths, grass verges and busy road junctions. The Parish Council appeals to all to consider that young children, mothers and pushchairs and the elderly and infirm are being forced to walk in roadways to get around illegally parked vehicles. North Yorkshire police are supporting the Parish Council in resolving this matter. We thank you for your help in anticipation.

Kellington in Bloom

Following the success of improving the look of the village at Christmas the Parish Council are seeking support for either garden, vegetable or hanging basket competitions. If you would like to get involved please contact R Fogden to register your interest.

Kellington Football Club Champions Selby & District Invitation League (Second Division)

The 2004/05 season kicked off away at Colton where Kellington LOST 5 goals to 2. This was the first and only game lost in this winning season. This is an outstanding achievement for our village team that also reached 3 semi finals of cup competitions. The team play another semi final on the 23rd April at home (Eggborough Sports & Social Club grounds) were the team will be presented with the league cup.

Next season (2005/06) Kellington AFC will be playing in the Selby First division and ask anybody who would like to play or train with the team (young or old) to contact Gary Smith or Andy Ellis (Via The Red Lion Public House).

As team manager Dave (Red Lion Landlord )I want to congratulate the team on what has been an outstanding performance. Players young and very old played this season. The youngest who played outstandingly was Kelvin Robinson. The oldest wished to remain nameless. All are welcome on the 23rd April or alternatively show your support at the presentation night 7th May Red Lion pub from 8pm. Cup presentation, winners medals etc, Disco and Buffet for everyone.

Easter Pram Race

Easter Sunday saw locals of the village pub taking part in the first Easter Pram race. The race consisted of two circuits of Eastfield, Bird and Ings Lanes. At the halfway point teams had to swap positions and drink a can of beer and eat dry biscuits. The final results, after much discussion and complaints and appeals were:
1st Kid's Tractor Team (Richard Bray & Andy Ellis) 2nd Porter's Trolley Team (Dale Fenton & Wayne Longford) 3rd Team Rocket (Gary Smith & Adam) 4th Team Wheelchair (Wendy Smith and Katie) and in 5th Team Tart's Trolley (Kevin Kelso & John Greaves). Marshalls on the day were John Holland and Mark Wallis. Mark was also responsible for the Pyrotechnics.

Garden Waste Bins

The re-cycling scheme is being extended to include Garden Greens and waste. Information will be distributed promoting the scheme. Bins will be delivered between the 18th of April and the 5th of May this year

The scheme mirrors other successful garden waste schemes. Because of the way the bin waste is managed Residents are urged to take care that the green garden waste is not put in the normal wheelie bin as this may mean it may not be emptied, and vice versa. District Councillor Paul Harvey confirmed that people are unable to get their bins to the collection point, as with the standard bin will have exemptions and the operatives will do it. Residents are urged to read the information carefully on the use of the bins when they are delivered.

Historical Snippet of Information!

Of the 112 workforce in the village, 45 males were agricultural labourers and 18 females were in service, this represents 57% of those in employment. It appears that the feudal system was alive and thriving in Kellington when the national census took place in April 1891!!!!!!

Christmas Tree

Well it seems a dim and past memory but the response to the village Christmas tree and the carol service was fabulous. We are going to respond to the positive comments and next year we will hopefully have more trees to celebrate the season. The Parish Council would like to thank all the groups and local businesses for their support with this village event.

Kellington County Primary School Nursery
The opening of the nursery was a great success and 23 children are enjoying the smart new facilities. Further places are available.
If you have a child who was born between 1st September 2001 and 31st august 2003, he or she is eligible to start nursery school during the academic year 2005/2006. If you would like your child to start Kellington primary school nursery during next academic year you must have registered by 31st March 2005. Applications must be made on the official form (available from the school office) and returned to school.

Venture Fest

Local village students and budding entrepreneurs who attend Brayton College took part in Skillsfest Industry competition for Key Stage 4 along with pupils from several schools across North Yorkshire. The competition involved initiatives of bioscience; food and drink; digital and advanced engineering and manufactoring sectors.

The competition involved a two day Skills Festival in Harrogate last December and the teams competed during the Yorkshire Venturefest at York Racecourse earlier this month. The winners of the heats progressed to a panel of expert judges who also judged Venturefest Yorkshire Business Award 2005 winner.

Brayton College entered four teams and walked away with 3 major awards and were judged as having the most innovative product/service in the bioscience challenge. Judged by TV personality Johnny Ball and Trevor Bayliss OBE [the inventor of the wind up radio]. The bioscience team also won their heat as sector champions. Brayton's engineering team also won their heat, and the college were overall runners up in the competition and scooped up prize money in excess of £2000.

The Skillsfest challenge initiative was organised by Andrew Papworth on behalf of Young Enterprise Yorkshire and Humber and NYBEP.

Broad Band

Broad band technology hit our village on 19th January 2005. To access the latest internet communications contact your service provider.

Cost of Vandalism to Villagers

It's a sad but true fact that the cost of vandalism to our village by the mindless few costs all of us either directly or indirectly. The most recent mind numbing episode is the paint thrown at the bus shelter, the same bus shelter that generated a petition of over a hundred villagers to keep and improve. The Parish Council has the responsibility to tidy up the vandalism and that will be paid for out of the Parish precept. Costs of repairs to the village hall have had to be paid from the same fund, the replacement of the bridge burnt last year will be over £5000. Please report any acts of vandalism or any social behaviour to the Police. A recent contribution to the village website stated "we all know who they are", if you do please report it. This stupidity costs us all.

A final point, there are so many children in our village that parents can be proud of. Please do not tar them with the same brush as the few idiots.

The Parish Council will publish the full costs of vandalism to our village in the period of 1st April 2004 - 31st March 2005 in the April newsletter

New Bridge

The bridge burnt by local vandals will be replaced with a new metal structure in the next few weeks. The bridge replacement will cost over £5000.

Traffic Calming

Work on the long awaited traffic calming scheme has begun. The reduced speed limit and road humps are hoped to reduce the risk of accidents outside the school entrance.

Parking Courtesy

A number of complaints have been made to the Parish Council regarding vehicles being parked on footpaths blocking pedestrian access. Please consider the safety of others when parking cars on footpaths.

Village Website

If you have not heard then take a look at www.kellington.net

This is our village website that contains a whole host of information about our village. The website includes events, history, services, post bag and lots lots more. The person behind this website is Robbie Beechey. We have included a flier with this edition because of the wealth of information available.

The Parish Council would like to thank Robbie for the fabulous work she is doing developing the site that has received over 3000 hits in the first month.

If you have any contributions then please visit the site or contact the Parish Council via the contact details from this newsletter.

The Season Will Soon Be Upon Us at Eggborough Cricket Club

With the season fast approaching everyone at the club are geared up to emulate last season's successful table toping performance and gain promotion into next season's division four of the Pontefract and District Cricket League. However, anyone interested in playing for the club can attend one of the training sessions which are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings or by contacting the Chairman on 661747.

The club are entering a team in the Thursday League competition. It is, however, an open age team and once again anyone interested in playing in this newly formed team can contact the Chairman for further details.
Eggborough Cricket team

Cricket Training will start Wednesday 16th Feb. 05 @ Selby College - 8pm to 9pm.
The following week training will start @ 7pm to 8pm.
We are sharing a net with Hensall lads.

Kellington Winning Ways

Kellington football team continue their winning ways and are now clear leaders in the second division of the Selby League Football Association. The team has played fifteen league matches, winning eleven, drawing three and losing only one and are three points to the better than their closest rivals, Colton. Playing attractive football they have recently beaten Wistow 5-3 away, Drax 12-2 at home and last week beat Black Dog by 4 goals to 2. Promotion is now very much in their sights.

Historical Snippet of Information!

Beal Board School had been only opened for two years when the headmaster, Henry E Storey, was concerned about the acute absence of pupils attending school. He had every reason to be concerned because his salary was linked to school attendance. This is what he wrote in the school logbook concerning this incident.

11 March 1878 So many children absent today that absentees were sent after, various replies returned. One read as follows.

· To weed the garden this rainy season
· I kept them off and that's the reason.
· If it be wrong to weed the garden
· I'll drop the job and beg your pardon.

I wonder if the parent's sense of humour was appreciated by Mr Storey, I very much doubt it.

Changes to Recycling Services
The collection of cans and tins can now be included in the blue (glass) bins. Other items that can be included are clean food cans, foil and drinks cans. The collection will remain the same and road side collections will carry on as normal. Selby District Council will be sending information on these changes to each home in the village.

Coping Stones Stolen
The church wall has had the top coping stones stolen for the entire length of the wall adjacent to Church Lane. The cost of replacements is hundreds of pounds. This is the latest in a series of mindless acts of vandalism at the church that has included damage to windows by air rifle pellets. Other acts of vandalism have include the setting fire of hay bails and the damage to young trees in Roal Plantation. If you can help identify the thieves or vandals or are aware of any other acts of vandalism or anti social behaviour in our village contact our Community Police Officers PC Chris Ryan or PC John Hart on 01904 631321.

Parish Councillors voted unanimously to become trustees of the village hall at the last council Meeting on 13th October. The Parish Council supported by County Councillor John Vause fully support the redevelopment of the hall and this key decision will allow the progression of a change in management of the village hall from the Parochial Church council to a village managed trust. Chair of the Parish Plan Committee Stan Aylott said that this would allow significant grant funding to be applied for to improve the facilities and condition of the hall and make it a true focal point and asset to the people of Kellington.
If you would like to become involved in the new management of the village hall please contact the Clerk of the Parish Council on 01977 702097 or email Arrky@aol.com

Free School Bus
Holy Family and St Michaels Catholic Primary School Pontefract have a free bus that picks Catholic children up from the village to take them to school. The transport is provided by North Yorkshire Education Authority and is free for catholic families and also serves to take the older children to St Wilfred's High School.
The school serves the Catholic Parish of St Michaels in Knottingley in which Kellington, Beal and Kellingley are included. The small and friendly school also offers a Breakfast Club prior to school starting and "Happy Families" After School Club where children can enjoy after school activities until 6:00pm. To find out more about the school please contact the Headteacher Mrs Weir on 01977 722740.

Drain Works

The work on replacing the village drains is well underway and is on target to be completed in February 2005. Yorkshire Water's contractors Mowlen Johnson are taking steps to reduce disturbance to villagers and will keep residents informed when works are to be undertaken outside individual houses. If you have any concerns contact Yorkshire Water on xxxx xxxxxxxx.
The only difficulties experienced so far are congestion in Bird Lane/Ings Lane where the contractors have been loading and unloading equipment adjacent to the Pumping Station. Some residents have experienced vehicles travelling across their lawns. Please respect other people's property.

Carols around the Christmas Tree
Following the success of the first carol service in the village last year a second service is planned for the 3rd\December at 7:00pm. The Parish Council has pledged to provide a Christmas tree and lights to decorate the village. The tree will be positioned on the green in Main Street opposite Pickhaven Garth. The Parish Council has responded to numerous requests to add decoration to the village during the festive season. The tree will add the atmosphere to the wonderful carol service that is being organised by St Edmunds Guide Pack who will be providing seasonal refreshments including mulled wine and mince pies.
The carol singing will be supported by the Selby Guide and Scout band. Everyone is welcome.
