John, Captain of the Sapphire Blues, with the club's youngest member, Lewis, on his way into Church for his Christening. The team, along with Gemma and John's family and friends, were there to support him on this happy occasion, which was followed by a great get together which we all enjoyed very much.

Diary

During the summer when the teams are away at competitions, there will not be a Sunday practice. Practices will definitely be held on the following Sundays though, as we are not entering competitions on these dates :-

10th June 17th June 14th July 21st July 28th July

Weekly practices will resume towards the middle of September.

We will be giving a Flyball Demonstration at Womersley on Saturday, 23rd June. This should be a very enjoyable day out, as we only have to do 2 spots, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, so we should be able to take part in a team picnic in between as well. This will involve dogs at all stages of their training, from new beginners to the most experienced dogs.

Tournaments entered / entering this year are listed below - there will be no practices on the Sundays that we have teams running in tournaments. However, it might be possible to arrange starter practices at other times - if so, they will be listed here.

Carlton Towers - 7th/8th April
Drax - 5th/6th/7th May
Sutton Fields, Runcorn, Cheshire - 19th/20th May
European Championships, Guildford, Surrey 26th/27th/28th May
Ryecroft Farm, Ashley, Cheshire 2nd/3rd June
Cantley Park, Doncaster 24th June
Penny Farm Blackpool 30th June/1st July
Rycroft Farm 7th/8th July
York Racecourse 4th/5th August
Camperdown Park, Scotland 11th/12th August
Drax - our own tournament 25th-27th August
Penny Farm, Blackpool 8th/9th September

Team members - please check your availability and make sure you are listed HERE for any tournaments you wish to enter and that you have the correct camping places booked. Fees information is also available

Obtain a weather forecast for tournaments or practices - these forecasts seem to be pretty reliable, particularly for the 1st few days, when you can have an hourly forecast. You can obtain forecasts up to 15 days in advance, but these can change as you get nearer the date. Specially useful are the wind speeds [awning or not?] and for the older ones amongst us, the Arthritis index.

Latest Awards

The dogs have collected another 6 landmark awards between them - Scamp, with Roger, has gained 20, 000 points to earn his Ice Blue Moon Award for - a magnificent achievement.

4 of the dogs, Cassie, Daisy May, Rory and Zak have all made it to Flyball Dog Advanced - 5000 points and Zak 2 has gone over the 1000 point mark to gain his Flyball Dog Intermediate award.

Two other dogs Trixie and Rikki and their handlers are waiting for the points they have earned in the last couple of tournaments to go up on the BFA website to see if they, too, have gained their Flyball Dog Advanced award.

Awards [May 2007]

6 of our dogs achieved landmark awards at our own tournament held at Drax over the May Day Bank Holiday.

2 of them, Rikki and Megan have now gained over 3000 points and will shortly collect their Flyball Dog Graduate certificates. Megan will now be enjoying a well earned retirement but Rikki will be continuing for a long time yet we hope. Both dogs belong to Alison Wood

4 of the dogs achieved their Flyball Dog award, which is for 200 points. This is actually for many dogs the hardest one to get, as they have to go from never having done flyball and finding out what its all about to running correctly without any assistance, netting or wings, and to do it without being distracted by all the noise, smells and other dogs around them at a tournament.

The dogs who managed it this time were Joe with Dennis , Jess with Carolyn , Sandi with Tony and Bugsy with Christine

Straight to games, videos etc

Have fun making Zak pull faces.

New Arrival

Congratulations and well done to John and Gemma on the safe arrival of baby Lewis, born Thursday, April12th at 1pm and weighing 7lbs 14 ounces. Perfect timing for Flyball - John led his team to victory in Division 6 on Sunday at Carlton Towers, and hopefully the family will have caught up on their sleep by the May Day weekend to give a good performance at our own tournament.

Late news.

Lewis arrived at Flyball today, 15th April, aged just a few hours short of 3 days old. Definitely the wow factor for today's practice. He is gorgeous, and slept happily through the practice, both in his pushchair and while being carried around by his very proud Dad. Sasha seemed quite proud of him too.

Awards

On13th January, at the Walthoef Centre, Sheffield, Robbie achieved his Flyball Dog award [200 points] and Rory achieved his Flyball Dog Graduate award for 3000 points.

Robbie is a large, fluffy German Shepherd who was rescued from the streets by Alison. GSDs are not usually the fastest of flyball dogs and Alison and Robbie have worked really hard for this - a real achievement.

Rory belongs to Alison's mum, Barbara - so family celebrations were called for.

The Spitfires in training, March 2007

As we now have so many very competent flyball dogs, we've divided them into permanent teams. The team Captains are Roger Talbot, Sue Talbot, John Walters, Alison Wood and Kate Mortimer.

We are now training hard for the outdoor season, beginning with the Carlton Towers tournament, when the Spitfires [Captain - Roger], the Crusaders [Captains - Alison and Kate] will be running on the Saturday while the Sapphire Blues [captain - John] will be running on the Sunday.

A few of the club's dogs, [Jess, Zippy, Trixie, Woody and Sandy] might well also have a go at Clever Dogs, which is a knock out competition consisting of an agilty round followed by a flyball run. This is a qualifying round for the final to be held at Asfordby [Leicestershire] in August and we are not expecting amazing results, though Trixie has done very well in this event in the past.

On the weekend of 24th/25th of February, Roger, John, Kate and Alison travelled to Newark to take part in a training seminar and a Judges seminar, which they found both informative and interesting.

Congratulations to John, Kate and Alison on qualifying as judges - we now have 3 judges and a Head Judge within the team.

Sad News

We all hope our dogs will enjoy a long and active life, but sadly, Tag died on March 6th this year just before her 10th birthday. Although she had developed quite severe breathing difficulties, she remained very active until the day of her death, enjoying a walk round Pontefract Park the day before and running through the weaving poles in the garden just before her final journey to the vet. She was a much loved, typical collie, ready to work right up to the end.

Phoenix is the club's 2nd Rottie - she will be running in Starters in a few weeks time. Her mother, Sasha, runs in the Sapphire Blues team, and has the highest points score of any Rottweiller in the country by quite a large margin. As well as being good flyball dogs, both have superb temperaments, much to Zak's relief when he overshot his runback during practice and found himself sliding along on his side, straight under Sasha's belly. Apart from looking a little surprised, she didn't react at all.

Games for you to play when its too wet for flyball

[Flash player rquired for these games]

To really waste your time, try to do this better than your dog - especially if he's a collie.

So you think you're as good as your dog now do you?

Well, how about this one then, or even this one?

This Flyball game appeared on the Butcher's site a few years ago - Click Here

You might like to renew your aquaintance with it - harder than the real thing though.

There are more games of various kinds to be found on this page of the village website if you've still time to spare.
