/ winter 2007 Results
[latest first]
Waltheof
Centre, Sheffield, 17th March 2007
This
was the last tournament of the indoor season for us, and although
cold and windy, the weather was pleasant and dry.
3
of our teams were entered, The Kellington Spitfires, captained
by Roger, the Kellington Sapphire Blues, captained by John and
the Kellington Crusaders, captained by Alison and Kate. Both the
Spitfires and the Crusaders took a long time to settle down, as
inexperienced dogs were running in each of these teams, and it
wasn't until the afternoon sessions that we saw them at their
best. Unfortunately that was too late to put them into the rosettes,
but the Spitfires managed a best time of 20.89seconds. The Sapphire
Blues were seeded 1st in their division [Div 4], and got into
their stride straight away, winning all their races and taking
1st place. All 3 teams are now looking forward to the traditional
start of the next season, when we compete at the Carlton Towers
Game Fair at Easter.
Waltheof
Centre, Sheffield, 13th January 2007
Although strictly
speaking, this was the 1st tournament for the teams of 2007, it
was the last of the winter tournaments for our teams, so is included
with the 2006 results.
3 teams ran
at the tournament, the Spitfires, the Hurricanes and the Crusaders,
and all enjoyed a good day. The Hurricanes came 1st in Division
3, with a fastest time of 20.58 and the Spitfires came 2nd in
division 2 with a fastest time of 20.68 - it looks as though these
2 teams are going to be enjoying keen competition throughout the
coming season to get the fastest times within the club. The Crusaders
were running with 2 dogs short and only managed a 5th place in
Division 5, but nevertheless enjoyed their day. It was Bugsy's
1st tournament, and after the initial shock of seeing so many
dogs making so much noise in an enclosed space [he'd never run
indoors before] he settled down and ran well, though it was obvious
he preferred Sue as box loader to Roger - he should prove to be
an excellent height dog as the outdoor season unfolds.
Rachel and
Leo gained their 1st certificate, Flyball Dog, with 200 points.
Anglesey
Showground - 9th December
Kellington
took 2 teams to Anglesey - the Kellington Hurricanes and the Kellington
Power Racers. The Power Racers came 5th in Division 2 with a best
time of 19.82 and the Kellington Hurricanes had a best time of
20.80, also coming 5th, this time in Division 3. The weekend proved
to be a good opener for the Christmas season, with the teams enjoying
a pleasant meal together after the day's racing.
Newark,
25th November
With
both the Kellington Power Racers and the Kellington Sapphire Blues
running in Division 2, helpers in the ring were a little stretched.
Kellington Power Racers came 2nd, with a best time of 20.58 seconds,
while the Sapphire Blues managed a best time of 20.73 seconds,
coming 6th.
In
Division 3, the Kellington Krawlers came 5th with a best time
of 24.39 seconds.
Selby
College, 11th November
It
was a cold, damp and very muddy day outside the Sports Hall, but
inside, as is usual at indoor tournaments, it was full of excited
dogs and their handlers, extremely noisy and quite a comfortable
temperature. Both Kellington teams were seeded last in their divisions,
but nevertheless, did very well, with the Kellington Power Racers
coming 2nd in Division 2 and the Kellington Krawlers taking 1st
place in Division 3. The 250 points she earned meant that Sasha
[Kellington Power Racers] achieved her Flyball Dog Advanced at
this competition.
Waltheof
Centre, Sheffield, 21st October
This
was the 1st indoor tournament of the winter season for the Kellington
teams, and things went according to prediction , in that the Power
Racers were seeded 5th in their division, and achieved 5th place,
unfortunately just out of the rosettes. The Kellington Krawlers
were seeded 1st in their division, and were delighted to take
1st place.
The
next outings will be at Selby College [11th November ] and Newark
[25/26th November], followed by a trip to Anglesey in December.
Penny
Farm, Blackpool, 9th &10th September
For
the Kellington Flyball Club, this was the last tournament of the
outdoor season, and what a contrast in the weather from the previous
weekend at Sheffield! This time the organisers were favoured with
a very pleasant weekend.
On
the Sunday, the Power Racers won their division, Division 4, with
a best time of 19.82 seconds.
The
Sapphire Blues raced on the Saturday, achieving a best time of
21.11 seconds, which although faster than the winners, only achieved
a 5th place. They did however collect quite a few points between
them, so were quite satisfied.
Sheffield/Sherwood
Foresters - September 1st and 2nd
This tournament
was held at the Redmires Playing fields, Lodge Moor, Sheffield.
The venue is beautiful, high up on the very edge of Sheffield,
overlooking the Derbyshire countryside and part of the city of
Sheffield. It's surrounded by lovely woodland and countryside
walks with a pub serving excellent food more or less on site.
Unfortunately the weather was not just inclement, it was appalling.
We arrived
on Friday afternoon and had the pleasure of erecting our tents
and awnings in a howling gale, but it was sunny and when the wind
dropped dogs and owners could really enjoy the site. Saturday
morning dawned - still dry but very overcast and windy. As those
coming just for the day began to arrive, the rain began to fall
and the wind began to rise. The Power Racers won all 3 of their
morning races, and the Sapphire Blues won 2 out of their 3, losing
only to the Hillam Hot Dogs in the 5th leg.
The starters
division followed and during this time the weather took a real
turn for the worse - gazebos, tents and awnings collapsed and
2 of the Portaloos overturned - fortunately they were unoccupied
at the time. The decision was taken to abandon racing - very rare
in Flyball, and 1st place rosettes were given to the teams with
the fastest time in each division. The Sapphire Blues were absolutely
delighted to be awarded 1st place for their just sub 20 second
time
Drax,
August 26th, 27th and 28th
This was our
own tournament, and should have been held at our home ground at
the Drax Power Station Social Club. However, the arrival that
weekend of several hundred climate change protestors, intent on
closing down the Drax Power Station meant that we had to change
venue at very short notice. Our thanks must go to Dave at the
Social Club, who found us an alternative venue at the Royal Oak
at Hirst Courtney and to Steve, the landlord who did everything
he could to enable the tournament to go ahead. Not least should
we thank the residents of Hirst Courtney for putting up with the
inevitable disturbance that a flyball tournament creates when
held at the centre of a quiet residential village, and our fellow
flyballers who cheerfully accepted the much smaller venue and
subsequent restrictions of no gazebos and no barbeques. In fact
, many flyballers said how much they'd enjoyed the venue.
We were very
fortunate with the weather. Although we had heavy rain overnight,
it remained generally dry during the tournament, which did help
to keep the central track passable, so all vehicles and caravans
got away without too much difficulty.
We had 2 division
teams and a starter team running on the Saturday - Kellington
Power Racers took 1st place in Division 3, with a fastest time
of 19.75 and Kellington Krawlers came 2nd in Division 5 with a
fastest time of 21.05.
The Starter
team was not placed, but nevertheless we were delighted with the
performance of all our inexperienced dogs over the weekend, both
in the Divisions and in the Starters on both the Saturday and
the Sunday.
On the Sunday,
it was the turn of the Sapphire Blues in Division 4, who came
4th with a best time of 21.97. Arkwright, at his very 1st tournament
- never having run in Starters, surprised everyone. At practices
he'd sometimes been a bit difficult to catch and tended to run
out from time to time, but after his initial run when he discovered
the other team, he settled down and ran really well.
On Monday,
it was the turn of the Kellington Hurricanes. They finished the
day in 5th position, with a best time of 20.59
At the presentations,
Keith and Angus were both surprised and delighted to be presented
with Angus's Silver [10,000 point] landmark award. The team also
gave Keith a cake.

As
we prepared to leave on the Friday morning, Kellington
was being battered by a ferocious thunder storm - the
thought that Flyballers are mad came to mind. Things did
improve, though, and some of us managed to get our tents
and awnings erected without getting too wet. It was a
first time at the venue, and we were pleased to find the
exercise area was excellent, and for some reason, our
corner of the camping area was full of familiar faces
from the Northern Flyball scene.
Saturday
morning was fine and sunny - we were racing in Division
7, which was the 3rd division on. We'd met 3 of the teams
before, Nuneaton Dodgers, Nuneaton Kestrels and Doncaster
Northern Stars, but 2 of the teams were from the South,
the Barkshire Bambinos and the Basset Hotdogs [from Swindon].
Racing was very close, but we won all 3 of our morning
races, so were in a strong position for the start of the
afternoon's racing. Unfortunately the weather deteriorated
rapidly, and by the time we raced it was raining heavily.
We beat the Nuneaton Dodgers - again a very close race,
but just lost to the Basset Hotdogs. This meant a 3 way
tie for the top 3 places between the Barkshire Bambinos,
the Basset Hotdogs and Kellington Power Racers. By this
time the racing lanes were very muddy. We went first and
beat the Basset Hotdogs, as did the Barkshire Bambinos,
leaving everything dependent on our last race, which resulted
in a dead heat. The rerun was extremely close, but the
Barkshire Bandit's dog just made it back across the line
first. Our best time of the day was 19.69 seconds.
We
returned to our camp extremely wet and muddy - Zak had
turned from a white dog to a red/brown dog with just a
white saddle where his harness had been - but taking 2nd
place with such exciting and close run racing made the
soaking well worth while.

Doncaster
Bellestars, 13th August
This
was the 1st outing for the Kellington Krawlers, who were
absolutely delighted to take 1st place in Division 6 with
a fastest time of 20.89 seconds. Only once was the time
over 22 seconds, so the dogs collected a very respectable
number of points each.
Ryecroft
Farm, July 8 / 9th
Another
excellent weekend's racing for the Kellington teams. On
the Saturday, the Sapphire Blues took 2nd place, with a
best time of 21.26, while the Power Racers took 1st place,
winning all races, on Sunday with a best time of 19.68.

Wakefield
Tykes Tournament at Askham Bryan - 1st / 2nd July
This
was the very last tournament to be run by the Tykes, who
really are the parent team of all the teams in the North
- it will be sad to see them go.
Both
teams performed exceptionally well, both coming 1st in their
divisions. Both teams only lost one race all day, the Sapphires
their first race, and the Power Racers their last one.
Doncaster
Belle Stars Tournament - 24th /25th June
On the
weekend of the 25th June, both teams took 3rd place in their
respective divisions after some close racing - taking home
the very pretty star shaped rosettes given out by Doncaster.
Selby
College, 4th February,
Roger
and I would like to say on behalf of the Kellington Flyball
teams, a very big Thankyou to the Dog Friendly Flyball Team
for a
great day's racing on Saturday. We would also like to thank
all our
team members for doing so well,The Kellitots( for some of
them there
very first competition for points) for coming third in Division
five.
the Sapphire Blues for coming first in Div 4 and the Power
Racers who
came first in Division one( although we were seeded last
in that
division).
Once again thankyou to the Dog Friendly people and all the
teams we
raced against in all divisions. Especially Blackpool.

On
Sunday, August 7th, the Kellington Power Racers were delighted
to come 1st in Division 2 at the Tykes tournament held on York
Racecourse, especially as they started off as the bottom seed
in the division.

The
starter team also ran, and included Milly, a Border Terrier from
the Hillam Hot Dogs, who was looking for a run. Special mention
must be made of Scooby - not only her 1st tournament, but only
the 3rd time she'd seen flyball at all. As you can see, she did
very well. The team didn't make it into the rosettes, but nevertheless
can count it as a very successful day out.
